Real Family Stories

Hearing from disabled children, families of disabled children and short break carers can inspire people to become short break carers or better understand the role. Our DVDs have a range of short films featuring different short break carers and interviews with families of disabled children and short break carers and their families.

  • There are colourful inspiring Short Break Carer factshhets to download from the CWDC (Children's Workforce Development Council's) website. Some services use these during the initial meetings with potential carers or display at events.

  • Contact a Family's guide Our Family our Future tells the stories of 30 families of disabled children. It can be purchased as a book or downloaded. Again some services use this at initial meetings to help potential short break carers understand why disabled children need short breaks.

  • This free DVD from ACT features a family of a child with complex healthcare needs visit ACT to order

  • The films Meet some carers children, meet some disabled children and meet some short break carers from Short Breaks Network's I Could Do That DVD all give good insight into how short breaks impact on families lives.

  • Other local authorities have produced their own DVDs to recruit carers, tell
families about short breaks and encourage universal providers to provide
short breaks such as Hampshire County Council's Inclusion Pack
